Reprint: A 1st Person Aftermath

I’ve reprinted this almost every year since the Towers fell:
Written September 18, 2001, the first day I could board the Staten Island Ferry, and get into Manhattan. It was first posted my my old xanga.com blog, it’s been since posted to usenet and other blogs. Ironically, it was Rosh ha Shanna. The comment at the end still rings true. 9 years later, it still rings true. 9 years later…

Aftermath In the World of the Discordian, I would hazard that as of 9/11/01, we have left the Age of Bureaucacy, and entered the Age of Aftermath…

Sept 18, 2001 (Rosh HaShanah) I wrote:

A week ago, while trying to capture the remnants of Dreams, the phone rang. “Kelly, it’s Carl. the World Trade Center collapsed.” and with those words, everything changed. I turned on the radio and listened. Carl and I talked about what happened, about the safety of his family when he said: “The other Tower just collapsed. I gotta go.” He had watched it all from his office.

Over the next few days, I climbed out onto the fire escape to view the skyline. We had entered the Underworld, and New York Harbor had become the River Styx with Charon at the helm of the Ferries that ran between South Ferry and Staten Island, I emailed friends and family to let them know I was ok, helped a friend whose Mother was Missing Never to be Recovered, volunteered at the Red Cross Emergency Center at the just opened Staten Island Yankees Ballpark….

(written on the Ferry going towards Lower Manhattan) I am now beginning my own Journey to the Underworld. I am no Orpheus, but, perhaps I am. The city is shrouded. The forlorn tolling of a buoy bell. Is that fog? or, is it smoke from the still smoldering ruins? It’s a cynic’s question. Journalist on deck. from Japan. from somewhere in the U.S.

I can feel the Pain. Smell the Dead. The Ferry is arriving and I step in the Domain of Hades and Hekate.

I chose to ride a bus. An M15 Local. Not much choice. It’s the only running. Lower Manhattan was ghostly in its emptiness. as the bus turned off Water St, it started to become surreal – from the closed stores and the empty Sea Port. people walking to – where? As the bus moved uptown, Life returned in slow motion. the smoke. the smell receded to be replaced by traffic. The traffic grew heavier as and then came the pictures. Walls of pictures. no picture covering another, and one woman looking at each one in its turn that had been posted on a wall of a deli. the bus first passed by Beth Israel, then Bellvue and NYU. the next wall of pictures was taped to a construction barrier at, I believe, Bellvue. and the bus continued up 1st Ave. We passed a playground where the adults seemed to outnumber the children and none were at play. Getting off the bus at 50th St., in the shadow of the UN, I walked down to 48th St. and began to walk west towards Broadway. As I walked, I was struck by the Silence. No talking. no cell phones. no music. no car horns. Silence. I walked past a silent and empty Rockefeller Center, and I stopped to look at the FOX-TV News zipper and once more was stunned: bin Laden had achieved what no one could. A unilateral cease-fire betwixt Palestinians and Israelis. Maybe they finally realized that ‘tit for tat’ would bring ruin to both sides.

Later in the day, I walked over to Engine 54 in the Heart of the Theater District, just four blocks from the theater I used to manage. It was overwhelming. The Letters and flowers.Candles and Prayers. I cried. for the Missing Never to be Recovered, the Dead, the Living, but mostly for the children. I wished that they had missed this performance, along with the rest of the 5000+. It was one curtain that never should have gone up.

It’s weird. I’m sitting at Starbucks and the music is this “happy-Doo-Wop” version of “muzak” It was unreal looking out the window, traffic flowing down 9th Ave. as though nothing is amiss…I considered attending Rosh Hashanah services, but somehow, I felt empty by the consideration. so, I traveled back down to South Ferry, riding the 4 Express to Bowling Green. As the train approached Fulton Street Station, smoke was evident in the tunnel, you could smell flesh. My sinuses reacted immediately and I knew my voice would be affected as well.

What I didn’t plan on was becoming violently ill a few hours after I got home.

As I said, I wrote this one week after the event.

Some of it now seems naive.

However, it still makes me cry.

Reprint: How Evangelicals & Dominoinists use Magick

All too often, I hear “oh, you CAN’T do magick to do x/y/z. it’s bad ju-ju. Listen up folks:
Do you pray? You do magick
do you cross your fingers? You do magick
Do you say Geshundeit/Salud or “bless” when someone sneezes? You do magick

There are people out there “praying for you” and it isn’t altruistc. it is MAGICK. they are praying for your conversion to whatever (FundiXitianity) they write your name on paper and “nail it to a cross”

They also prayed for non-Christian students in their school and wrote their names down on paper.
In a solemn, symbolic offering, they nailed the pieces of paper to a wooden cross, set up beside the flag pole.

This is called BINDNG MAGICK

The Mad November Teaparty

While listening to C-Span, there was a comment about Boehner raising money for Rand Paul, yet not endorsing any of the winning teaparty candidates.  It occurred to me, that all the dire talk regarding a Republican takeover of the House may not be all it’s cracked up to be. As a lot of us have noticed, the teaparty really  comprised of sore losers, what with the defeated refusing to share stage and endorse the winning Republican candidate.  How will this shape up at the polls? Will they stay home? Will they vote “None of the above“? It feels to me, that they will stay home, since they will not hold their noses and vote for the unholy not “conservative” (i.e. radical/extreme) GOP candidate. THAT would be “politics as usual” and “surrendering”. In other words, the dodos are running a caucus race.
Alice and the Dodo caucusing Pictures, Images and Photos
This does not mean that those of us on the “Left” Progressives, Moderates and others should sit on our asses and stay home. Quite the contrary, we should be out firing up our “disaffected” peers. Democracy is a grassroots, community organized affair.

Uncomfortable Art in Newark or, F#*K CURATORS

On Saturday August 28, at Newark‘s Index Gallery, a little gallery show was held featuring the art of

TaskOne, …Mr. Mustart, Serron and Dmitry Gubin. Ironically it was curated by Extranjera. The name of the exhibit stems from the difficulty talented, controversial artists and their provocative subjects have in getting a gallery show without compromising their vision.  While all of the artists are extraordinary, Serron is a standout. His art is political, provocative, confrontational and frankly uncomfortable. It was Serron I had the opportunity to chat with about his art, and his modesty about his talent was amazing. Soft-spoken with a keen eye, his works hark back to the politically active years of the 1960’s from the Newark Riot piece to his take on an old joke to placing that very uncomfortable word “Nigger” square in your face in such a way that the soul-killing meaning of that words cannot be avoided or justified by use by anyone. One work, is mixed media paint and paper. “FREE HUEY”. A flier for a fundraiser in support of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense (a/k/a THE Black Panthers of Huey Newton, Eldridge Cleaver, Prof. Angela Davis)

TaskOne has a style reminiscent of contemporary anime,  Dmirty Gubin is bold strokes of color. …Mr. Mustart uses found pieces such as chinese take out menus overlaid with “Hello Kitty!” Keep your eyes open – you’ll be hearing more of all of these Newark, NJ talents.

Sleep Deprivation…

In my ongoing battle against my landlord and bedbugs, who as far as I am concerned are no different in that they are both uncaring unfeeling greedy little bloodsuckers, I can now claim sleep deprivation.

“But 40 year old magpie,” you ask, “how can you tell?”

Simple. I’m on the verge of tears when talking to my lawyer about this. I only cry when I”m either extremely upset or very tired.

They did what passes for them as “extermination” one week ago. Listen, Charlie, a certification in the handling of poisons used for the eradication of vermin does not mean you are expert at eradicating them. Quite the contrary. I had to point out an area for you to spray, you moved nothing than a foam seat a bit away from a wall, sprayed the cat toy and blanket when you sprayed by the radiator, you sprayed my cat’s food rather than be bothered to ask me to move them,I asked you to stop so I could move them. You failed to spray the entire living/sleeping area of my studio. Oh, wait, that would have required you to actually know what the fuck you were doing. A professional would have taken 4 – 6 hours to exterminate. You took a total of perhaps 30 minutes with a “water-based” pesticide that didn’t do shit for eradicating the little parasites from the sofabed, let alone the the apartment. Oh, I’m sure you believe they are gone, and that no one ever complained to you before.

Oh, and thanks for telling me you had no intention of honoring the Stip. Makes my case to the Judge when we go back to L/T Court that much easier.

Ghimeabragh

There was a very good reason I didn’t give the money to the Court

July 20, 2010, I signed a stip agreement with the Calello Agency in the presence of their lawyer, that in return for paying my July rent , they’d make repairs and exterminate bedbugs by the end of July. That didn’t happen, as I knew it would go down that way.

On Aug 2, I hand-delivered this letter:

August 2, 2010
[Address removed]
Dear M—,
Under the terms of the stip we (You, the Agency Lawyer and I) signed on 20 July 2010, certain conditions were to me be met in order for the rent of July 2010 t be paid.
My July/August rent is now in escrow pending the complete fulfillment of the July 20 stip.

Unfortunately, there is more to that stip than simply providing me that which should have been provided in March when I took possession of my apartment located at [address removed], namely my mailbox key; I am still awaiting the following portions of the stip to be addressed:
The broken window
the torn screen
the fire escape (Charlie coming in with a workman to “measure” or any other nonsense meant to assuage me that it is being addressed will not be considered addressing this safety issue)
The bedbugs. Under NJ state law, you are obligated to deal immediately with the issue, not three plus months or longer after being informed of the infestation. Again, Charlie coming in to improperly deal with this issue will not be considered to be fulfilling the stip. The chemical used is highly toxic, and if the way Charlie “sprayed” for roaches is an indication, the result will only bed bugs that are more resistant to the chemical than they are at present.

If you or Charlie cannot reach me by phone, it takes little effort for Charlie to stop by and slide a note under my door regarding the above issues. Unless of course, Charlie   (or you) prefers to be required by Court order to act.

Sincerely yours,
[my signature]

Please note, I indicated in the letter, that I was withholding both July and August as they had not honored the agreement. There was no objection to my withholding my July rent at that time. Fast forward to August 13, 2 days after they got around to repairing the windows and “exterminating”: I was mailed a three day notice to quit for, get this; NON-PAYMENT OF RENT. They went to get the withheld monies from the court without completing the terms of the Stip – fixing the fire escape, and got spanked. To make it better, Charlie intimated, that they weren’t going to make the fire escape repair, saying that the struts under the landing was sufficient.

The missing fire escape bolt and brick

The same day as I received the letter, I was the recipient of this as well:

The pestcide sure worked, Charlie

I’m still being bit. They want me out. I’m looking for relief for the breach of contract.

About that “Takeover” by Los Zetas in Laredo….

Over at examiner.com, where I am a photojournalist, there’s a lively thread regarding an article written by another examiner, who without citing her sources except as “anonymous” Laredo PD, wrote a piece of fiction about two ranches OUTSIDE the Laredo PD jurisdiction, being taken over by members of the Los Zetas drug cartel. One of the channel managers doesn’t seem to upset at the “reporters” lack of veracity, so, I answered with this:

According to Bob Owens, a blogger over at Andrew Breitbart’s biggovernment.com, the Examiner who broke “broke” the story is refusing to confirm her sources to him. Now, biggovernment is itself right wing, having been responsible for the destruction of ACORN through selectively edited video by James O’Keefe,(I should also point out, that ACORN has been cleared of wrongdoing, but the goal has been achieved) and caused the firing of Ms. Sherrod again by selectively edited video. Mr. Owens, while still blaming the Obama Admin. for the hoax, still calls everyone who promoted it:
http://biggovernment.com/bowens/2010/07/25/whats-wrong-with-laredo-part-i/

Cypress News publisher John G. Winder is sticking with the story, not because any additional evidence has been produced, but because the two sources for his version of the story, blog Digger’s Realm and Examiner.com’s San Diego (CA) County Political Buzz Examiner blogger Kimberly Dvorak are standing by their militiamen and anonymous police sources.

The original Cypress Times story? A re-publication of the original Digger’s Realm story.

The Digger’s Realm story? Two anonymous Laredo police sources and a San Diego California Minuteman named Jeff Schwilk who claims he got his information from… an anonymous Laredo PD officer.

San Diego County Poltical Buzz Examiner Kimberly Dvorak? She claims her information also comes from two anonymous Laredo PD sources.

Are we noticing a pattern here? Every bit of of this claim, which has now scattered far and wide across the Internet, can be traced back to two anonymous police department sources of a police department that does not even have jurisdiction where the alleged invasion is taking place.

I read a wide variety of news sources, be they rightwing or left, as it makes more informed. I also know that as a blogger, a blogger that has been cited on NPR and CBS.com, I have to cite my sources if I am writing about an article I read, and provide a link back to that original article so my readers can form their own opinions.
IMHO, unless we are more scrupulous in citing sources, and not making up things our of whole cloth, examiner.com will become irrelevant.
Even for me, a mere photojournalist. While I do not have to get written permission to photograph a storefront, I seek a written release if I want to shoot the interior and anyone inside. I know, that I can shoot the exterior of Prudential Arena, and there is nothing that the security can do short of assaulting me. I know, that I cannot shoot inside the Port Authority Bus Terminal, PERIOD, but it’s ok at NY Penn Station and Newark’s Penn Station. What’s the point of this? To illustrate that as reporters/citizen journalists, we have a responsibility to our readers not to gin up fears by posting fiction as fact.

You want to be a citizen journalist? Then, be one. You want to be a fiction writer? Fine, but don’t couch it as journalism
